The first big drug on the block is the antipsychotic drug Zyprexa. The FDA approved it as a treatment for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder in 1996, but it’s still not clear how safe it is. The drug’s label says it works by blocking dopamine receptors, but it’s unclear how safe this is.
But Zyprexa, like Seroquel and many antipsychotics, is associated with more side effects than most people. The side effects are similar between people on the same drug. Zyprexa can cause nausea, constipation, dizziness, and weight gain. Seroquel also can cause constipation, dry mouth, fatigue, dry mouth, insomnia, and dry mouth.
In a study of more than 2,000 people, researchers found that people who took Zyprexa also had a higher rate of suicidal thoughts and behavior than people who took no drugs. In addition, people taking Zyprexa also had a higher rate of diabetes and diabetes-related hospitalizations, compared to people taking no drugs.
Because of the potential for side effects, it’s not clear how safe the drug is.
However, the FDA’s warning on Zyprexa is about as clear as it gets. The label says it is generally safe and well-tolerated. But the FDA isn’t clear how safe the drug is.

For schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, the label says, doctors usually start with a dose of 300 mg. Then, they’ll adjust based on how many people are taking the drug. Doctors will take a maximum of 600 mg per day for schizophrenia and 300 mg for bipolar disorder.
“In the United States, the maximum recommended dose is 300 mg per day,” says Dr.
The FDA warns that the number of people who are prescribed Zyprexa for these conditions is often higher than the maximum dose. But that’s probably because there’s a higher risk of side effects and other health risks. Some side effects include diarrhea, nausea, dry mouth, constipation, insomnia, and fatigue.
Dr. Mark Hensley, a urologist at New York’s Staten Island University Hospital, says there’s no evidence that Zyprexa increases suicide risk or increases the risk of suicidal behavior in patients with bipolar disorder.
“There’s not enough data to say that Zyprexa increases suicidal risk. There are very few studies to show that Zyprexa increases suicide risk in patients with schizophrenia,” he says. “So the number one reason for that is the number of patients with schizophrenia and schizophrenia-related suicide risk.”
The FDA also says that Zyprexa is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other cardiovascular problems.
“The drug can also cause a high in high blood pressure, especially when combined with diabetes,” says Dr. David Gold, a urologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “It can cause an abnormal heart rhythm.”
The FDA also says Zyprexa may cause increased heart rate. But the FDA says the risk is low because it’s an atypical antipsychotic. And people who are taking the drug are less likely to develop other conditions than people taking the drugs, including hypertension.
There are other ways that people can take Zyprexa, including by eating or drinking alcohol. But that doesn’t mean that it’s safe to consume alcohol. It may increase your risk of side effects, especially for people who drink too much.
In the study, patients who took Zyprexa also were about 5 times more likely to be diagnosed with depression, as well as having a higher risk of suicide.
